Welcome to the True North Country Comics Podcast — originating in Canada and celebrating comic book and graphic novel creators and supporters.
On this episode I chat with Danila Botha about her graphic novel Vidal published by At Bay Press.
Based in Toronto, Ontario, Danila Botha is the critically acclaimed author of the short story collections Got No Secrets and the Trillium Book Award, Vine Awards, and ReLit Awards finalist For All the Men (and Some of the Women I’ve Known). Her most recent collection, Things that Cause Inappropriate Happiness was published by Guernica Editions in April 2024. She is also the author of the award winning novel Too Much on the Inside published in 2015. It was optioned for film by Pelee Entertainment in 2023. Her second novel A Place for People Like Us was published in Sept 2025. It won the Independent Press Award for Contemporary Novel, and was named a Finalist for the Eric Hoffer Book Award, the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, and the National Indie Excellence Awards. Her new graphic novel, Vidal, which she wrote and illustrated, was published by At Bay Press.

The story of Vidal traces the life of a Sephardic Jewish man under the Ottoman Empire, British Mandate Palestine and then as an artist in Europe before and during World War II. A rich artistic and cultural experience, Vidal brings to light the untold stories of family, hope, freedom, and what their pursuit can cost. Vidal reminds us all that it’s possible for things to be different.
