Ian Boothby and Pia Guerra discuss the dangers of ‘Frostbite’

Welcome to the True North Country Comics Podcast — originating in Canada and celebrating comic book and graphic novel creators and supporters.

On this episode, I chat with Ian Boothby and Pia Guerra about their new book Frostbite: A Graphic Novel published by Scholastic Canada.

Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Ian is a writer of comic books and cartoon strips as well as a sketch and improv comedian. He’s an Eisner Award–winning comic book creator known for his work as the main writer on The Simpsons comic book and one of the lead writers on Futurama Comics for Matt Groening’s Bongo Comics. He has been nominated for the Shuster and the Harvey awards. Ian is the writer and co-creator of the Scholastic Graphix graphic novel series Sparks! with artist Nina Matsumoto and the writer and co-creator of the Image Comics series Exorsisters with artist Gisele Legace. Ian was a feature writer for MAD Magazine where along with Pia Guerra he created the comic strip Meanwhile… which ran until the end of the magazine’s run. He now works with Pia creating cartoons for The New Yorker and the comic strip Mannequin on the Moon.

Also based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Pia Guerra is a 2023 Pulitzer Prize Finalist in Illustrated Reporting and Commentary for her contributions to The Washington Post. She co-created and illustrated Y: The Last Man for DC Comics’ Vertigo line, which became a New York Times bestseller and won multiple Eisner Awards, a Harvey Award, the Spike Award, and Canada’s Joe Shuster Award. With her husband and creative partner, Ian Boothby, Pia is a regular contributor for The New Yorker and co-creator of Mannequin on the Moon cartoons. Their new collaboration is Frostbite: A Graphic Novel.

The story of Frostbite: A Graphic Novel goes like this: “Teen influencers Jen and Dante post wild videos of themselves doing extreme sports. But when they jump out of a helicopter to ski down a mountain, the stunt goes way wrong. Dante’s ankle gets slashed, and the helicopter crew — who were supposed to be waiting at the bottom of the mountain — are nowhere to be found. As the confused teens seek answers from some locals, they all find themselves flesh-to-fang, trapped in an isolated cabin surrounded by frost vampires! Their only hope for survival is to make it to sunrise…”
