Renée Nault discusses new graphic novel ‘Salvage’

On this episode, I chat with Renée Nault about her new graphic novel Salvage published by Ten Speed Press.

Based in Victoria, British Columbia, Renée Nault is an artist, illustrator, and graphic novelist. She is known for her vivid and surreal watercolour illustrations, which have appeared in books, magazines, newspapers and advertising around the world.  Growing up near the ocean, she was influenced by the languid weightlessness and bright colours of underwater landscapes. She loves to travel, and has spent long stretches of time in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 2019, Renée’s graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian classic, The Handmaid’s Tale, was released. The book received critical acclaim and quickly became a bestseller, with several new international language editions in the works. Renée’s newest graphic novel is Salvage.

The story of Salvage follows two teenagers on opposite sides of a vast social divide in a post-climate change world. “Paolo lives in the Flats, a dangerous, water-logged community where families survive by salvaging materials from skyscrapers hidden just beneath the ocean’s surface—remnants of a world before sea levels rose. Scavenging the depths comes with its risks, but when Paolo discovers a suitcase of designer clothes, he decides to fulfill his dream: To spend one night in the Uplands, a place of privilege, excess, and freedom. There he meets Jules and her friends, and what begins as a single night of reckless adventure turns into a secret double life—and a seemingly impossible romance that forces Paolo to reckon with who he is, where he belongs, and the importance of being true to himself.”
