Keenan Poloncsak reveals book binding secrets

On this special episode in the series entitled Made In Canada – Creator Resources, I chat with specialists in particular areas to discuss whether Canadian comic book and graphic novel creators have all the resources they need in Canada to produce and promote their content.

Based in Montréal, Quebec, Keenan Poloncsak is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in illustration and traditional bookbinding. He is especially known for his graphic novels, comics and children’s books which he writes, illustrates, self-publishes and often binds himself. His latest comic is called The Bookbinder’s Slaughter. It’s a psychological thriller about a bookbinder and a creepy client, who is obsessed with spreading the word of God at any cost.

Keenan has been book binding since 2013, apprenticing under Josée Roberge at ”L’Atelier Milles et Une Feuilles” and Laura Shevchenko at ‘‘The Bookbinder’s Daughter” in Montréal. He has since bound and restored hundreds of books including his own publications. In the fall of 2018, Keenan worked as an assistant bookbinder for the Library of Parliament of Canada for six consecutive months. Since June 2020, he is the owner of the ” The Bookbinder of the Faubourgs”, formerly The Bookbinder’s Daughter, a traditional bindery situated in the old borough of Faubourg à M’lasse, now known as Faubourg St-Marie. The Bookbinder of the Faubourgs specializes in handmade bookbinding, restoration and repair of old and rare books using traditional methods as well as the most up-to-date techniques and materials.
