True North Country Comics presents Kathleen Lacy's top 10 go-to #ComicBook and graphic novel list

True North Country Comics presents Kathleen Lacy’s top 10 go-to comic book and graphic novel list.

Kathleen hails from Whitby, Ontario and studied animation at Durham College. She’s also the adult winner of the Whitby Comic Arts Contest. She largely writes humorous and mildly existential stories about friendship and spends a lot of time thinking about video games. Her most recent webcomic SideQuest Log is described as “an adventure fantasy but with the approximate stakes of going to 7-Eleven at 3:00am with your roommates.”

Here is the top 10 go-to comic book and graphic novel list from Kathleen Lacy:

1. BACK by Anthony Clark and KC Green
“I think KC Green is a webcomics legend at this point, and he and Anthony Clark are a power duo when it comes to slapstick and surrealism.”

2. Delicious in Dungeon by Ryoko Kui
“Endlessly funny while bizarrely grounded and detailed. An all-time great that delivers the whole package.”

3. Seven Little Sons of the Dragon by Ryoko Kui
“Ryoko Kui has written a lot of short stories, often returning to the complications that occur where fantasy meets reality. This collection deals a lot with the theme of family, and Delicious in Dungeon readers will see Kui’s strengths displayed across a variety of settings.”

4. Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama
“Magic broken down to its base components in a story that’s ultimately about learning a craft and overcoming barriers with creative problem solving and community.”

5. Cucumber Quest by Gigi D.G.
“Even with it on permanent hiatus, Cucumber Quest‘s 4 published books are a goldmine of quality comics. Hugely influential to an entire generation of artists, and proof that all-ages doesn’t have to compromise when it comes to engaging adults.”

6. The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen
“The transformative nature of fairytales focused in on a personal scale; subject matter perfectly suited for Nguyen’s gorgeous art that calls back to the golden age of illustration.”

7. Through the Woods by Emily Carroll
“Emily Carroll has an astounding instinct for both horror and aesthetics. I always go back to this collection for the gorgeous ink and watercolour art.”

8. Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda
“Dense on themes and world building. Brutal, but always with a glimmer of hope and heart.”

9. Prism Stalker by Sloane Leone
“I personally like sci-fi that leans into its biological and surreal aspects. One of many recent installments of genre fiction that directly challenges colonialist perspectives generally taken for granted.”

10. The Golden Age by Roxanne Moreil and Cyril Pedrosa
“A display of real mastery over basics of design and a feast for the eyes. Beautiful lines and inventive colour palettes evocative of 20th century illustration and lots of mind-boggling spreads.”
