The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) exists to promote the breadth and diversity of comics and what is considered comics as a legitimate medium of literary and artistic worth. TCAF seeks to promote the creators of these works in their broad and diverse voices for the betterment of the medium of comics and to reach as broad an audience as possible for them. TCAF is held from May 11 to 12 at the Toronto Reference Library.

Lucy Sullivan is a comic writer/artist from London, UK. Her acclaimed debut graphic novel Barking is based on the her own experience of a mental health crisis was first published during the pandemic and quickly sold out. The new edition launches in ’24 with Avery Hill Publishing and available for the first time in Canada & US. Alongside her comics and zines Lucy has created a variety of commissions for titles including Colossive Press Cartographies, Killtopia, Hey Amateur!, Department Of Truth and a Black Hammer short ‘Betwixt Between’ for Jeff Lemire. She is the artist on IND-XED with Fraser Campbell as well as stories with John Reppion for Skrawl Magazine, Jordan Thomas for Metallic Dynamite, Peter Davison for YOSHIN10 and Dan Watters for Razorblades (Image). The second part of her new Folk-Horror series Shelter is currently in development with Arts Council England. The first story Early Doors is out now – Winner of Broken Frontier’s ‘Best New Periodical Series’ Award.

The story of the graphic novel Barking goes like this: “when the depression and grief Alix feels over the death of her friend overwhelm her, she’s institutionalized. But inside a psychiatric ward, things don’t get better for her – now she has nowhere to get away from her rapidly-spiraling thoughts. As Alix navigates disinterested attendants, group therapy, and isolation, she must build herself a new equilibrium and tame the black dog of her depression.”
