Toronto Comicon: Brenda Hickey’s ‘Don’t Call Me Sidekick: The Contract’

On this episode, I chat with Brenda Hickey about her new graphic novel Don’t Call Me Sidekick: The Contract from Pegamoose Press.

Toronto Comicon is a spectacular three-day Sci-Fi, Horror, Anime, and Gaming event in Canada that attracts thousands of people to come to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, in Toronto, Ontario, taking place from March 20 to 22. Every year, Toronto Comicon offers exciting family-friendly attractions, events, world-renowned celebrities and a variety of comic creators including Brenda Hickey.

Brenda Hickey is a comic artist and writer from Prince Edward Island. She’s illustrated comics for “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (IDW Publishing), collaborated with Bobby Curnow on the original graphic novel “Ward’s Valley” (Top Shelf), Adventure Time (Oni Press), The Miraculous Ladybug Chibi (Papercutz) and recently wrote and illustrated two graphic novels for Netflix/Sanrio’s series Aggretsuko (Oni Press). Her latest graphic novel is Don’t Call Me Sidekick: The Contract.

The story of Don’t Call Me Sidekick: The Contract goes like this: “Enter Hazelton Academy, where an unlikely duo must pull together to battle the monsters not just outside their school walls, but within. Kailee Hazelton has a lot to live up to, and it’s off to a bad start. After being publicly rejected in front of the whole school by her partner, a magical Neysa creature named Ary, she finds herself at odds with her family and unsure of her dream of joining the Phantom Guard. A Phantom attack on the city catches them unprepared, and they must put their differences aside to face the threat.”
