At the recent Mississauga Comic Expo, Howard Wong and Keith Grachow led a program panel entitled ‘Making Canadian Comics Fun and Exciting!’. In this chat, Howard and Keith discuss the challenges and opportunities facing comic book creators today with some inspirational ideas to keep creating.

Based in Toronto, Ontario, Howard Wong is a versatile and experienced business creative professional who helps clients create, develop or revitalize their IPs and brands with his narrative driven solutions. His diverse experience includes working in animation, comic books, creative media, toys and collectibles, and video game industries. He has worked with industry leaders such as Bandai Namco, Bungie Inc., Marvel Comics, National Geographic, and Threezero, delivering high-quality services that exceeded their expectations. He has earned their trust and respect with his integrity, dedication and commitment to understanding what they really need to succeed with their business. His approach is based on insightful business-creative critical thinking from the discovery phase, through to developing bespoke media-neutral narrative solutions that are scalable, easily adaptable, and future-proof. Currently, Howard is working on several exciting projects, including client work in animation, comics and new media development, as well as developing creator-owned IPs including a YA graphic novel, horror series and an interactive narrative experience.

Based in Ontario, Keith Grachow is a comic book author-illustrator, graphic designer, and instructor who teaches workshops on illustration. Keith has written for SCI by AH Comics, co-written a story in Cauldron, authored his own comics (Yost the Golem, Bounty Hunter Kai) and co-created many comic books and anthology stories (Strange Case with Mark Bertolini for Scout Comics, Checkmate Blues with Robert Iveniuk and Toronto Comix Anthology 3-Snow Blind with Howard Wong ) and children’s books with his mother Amy (Up-In-The-Sky series). He has also worked in animation, as a digital ink-and-paint artist for the Disney movies ‘Winnie the Pooh’ and ‘Princess and the Frog’, and designed toy packages for products like Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon and the Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Currently, Keith is co-authoring and illustrating the graphic novel, Summer on The Swing, with his mother Amy Grachow; the semi-autobiographical comic tells the story of her upbringing in a bungalow colony in upstate New York in the 1960s.
