Here’s part two of the audio portion of a panel from San Diego Comic Con 2018 called Geek Media in Canada. The panel included:
Hope Nicholson who is the owner of Winnipeg-based publisher Bedside Press, a comics historian, and an enthusiastic fan of comics.
Pia Guerra who is a Vancouver based artist who was co-creator and lead penciller of the award winning Y – the Last Man with writer Brian K. Vaughan and inker Jose Marzan Jr..
Ian Boothby who is a writer for MAD Magazine, The New Yorker cartoons, Exorsisters and Sparks!
Sonya Ballantyne who is a filmmaker and writer originally from Misipawistik Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba.
Cecil Castellucci who is the Eisner nominated New York Times best-selling author of novels and comic books including Don’t Cosplay With My Heart, Moving Target: Princess Leia, Soupy Leaves Home, Shade The Changing Girl, and Plain Janes.
And Meghan Kearney who is the creator of the award-winning webcomic http://BATB.thecomicseries.com , manager of Toronto’s own Comic Book Embassy and is currently writing for Disney Princess.
Promoted as a “a roundtable discussion showcasing the different ways to make media in Canada”, the panel event definitely educated attendees at San Diego Comic Con 2018 about Canada and the comic book industry. In the second part of this two-part special, the panelists talked about the ups and downs of working in the Canadian media creation market, the complexities of Canadian dollar and the benefits of ‘home town’ support.
I want to especially thank Sonya for kindly allowing me to post the audio of this panel. Sonya recorded the event for her upcoming documentary entitled “Cree Super Girl” directed by Sage and produced by her film company Code Breaker Films. Keep an eye out of Sonya’s documentary that’s expected later this year.
