True North Country Comics Podcast chats with Francis Rufiange about the artwork behind 'The Caribou Trail' video game

Welcome to the True North Country Comics Podcast — dedicated to celebrate Canadian comic book and graphic novel creators and supporters.

On this episode, I chat with Francis Rufiange about his work on The Caribou Trail from Unreliable Narrators.

Francis Rufiange is the lead designer for The Caribou Trail. His previous game development efforts includes Two Falls plus work with Affordance Studio. The Caribou Trail is developed by Unreliable Narrators (in collaboration with Manavoid Entertainment), an independent studio focused on narrative-driven games rooted in history and human experience. The studio previously released Two Falls (Nishu Takuatshina), a critically acclaimed narrative exploration game that explored contrasting perspectives and cultural encounters.

The Caribou Trail is described as a visceral, first-person narrative experience about a band of friends from Newfoundland, sent on some of the most unlikely missions of the Great War. The video game is inspired by real events of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s role in the Gallipoli campaign — a failed effort by Allied forces to take control of Istanbul and the Black Sea. The Caribou Trail blends history with fiction to portray a rarely explored front of WWI: Gallipoli, from the landing to the final evacuation.  Cut through barbed wire in no man’s land on a desperate reconnaissance mission, silence a sniper holding the line, and make noise during a chaotic evacuation. Each step is experienced through your own eyes. Yet this is not about winning the war, it’s about enduring it.
