Ari Gross is based in Toronto, Ontario and when he’s not a being an historic Scientific Instrument Collection Curator or worm-viewer-designer for the Ontario Science Centre, he’s writing comic books. His past efforts have included Quantum Kirby, Don’t Go Below, The Longest Case and others. His latest comic book, with artist Robert Jennex, is entitled Wardens.

Wardens is set in 1926, in Toronto’s multicultural immigrant neighbourhood, “The Ward”. It follows Jewish seamstress and back-alley brawler Rachel Tussman who is plunged into a world of kabbalistic magic when a fire destroys their place of work and gives rise to The Schmata, a spiteful union of possessed clothes out for bloody revenge!

Wardens is described as a celebration of Toronto’s rich cultural tapestry and an exploration of a lost-but-not-forgotten neighbourhood focusing on its Jewish, Chinese, and Black communities. It’s got action, drama, laughs, and enough Yiddish to make your “bubbe plotz”!
