Cecil Castellucci talks about comic books, operas and more

Cecil is the award winning and New York Times bestselling author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Shade The Changing Girl, Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, Soupy Leaves Home, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, and Odd Duck. In 2015 she co-authored Star Wars Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure. Her most recent projects include the Female Furies and her multi-issue run on Batgirl for DC Comics. Cecil also wrote for a recent Black Hammer Visions project.

Soupy Leaves Home, now available in hardcover from Dark Horse, tells the story of Pearl Plankette who ran away from her home to escape an abusive father and unhappy future. Disguised and reborn as a boy named Soupy, she hitches her star to an unlikely hobo and they begin their journey from the cold heartbreak of their eastern homes toward the sunny promise of California in this train-hopping, depression-era coming-of-age tale. This new hardcover edition includes an educators guide written by Meryl Jaffe, PhD.

The Language of Flowers tells the story of enigmatic Princess Metternich who was described as the most infamous belle laide in Paris. She helped birth haute couture, introduced Wagner to Paris, and was a muse to painters such as Degas, plus had countless songs written about her. She was known to turn cartwheels in her crinoline, founded a smokers’ club where she and her friends enjoyed cigars, and smuggled the crown jewels out of France after the Second Empire fell.
