True North Country Comics presents Josh Tierney’s top 10 go-to comic book list.
Josh resides in Ontario, Canada and he’s the creator of the Eisner, Shuster, Harvey and Diamond Gem Award-nominated Spera series of fantasy graphic novels from Archaia/BOOM! Studios. He has also written the fantasy-adventure graphic novel Hunters (Buño/Lion Forge) and co-created the sci-fi miniseries HaloGen with Afu Chan and Giannis Milonogiannis.
WarmBloodComic.com is his high school mystery webcomic, soon available in print from Buño. His projects are created in collaboration with artists from around the world.
Here are Josh Tierney’s top 10 go-to comic book and graphic novels:
1. Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma
“The series’ central theme, written on the last page of every volume, is ‘enjoy everything’. Yotsuba helped me out of a deep depression in my early twenties, and I’m reminded of all the warmth and wonder in the world whenever I read it.”
2. Bone by Jeff Smith
“This is the comic that made me realise I could make, print and sell my own comics, and also the comic that introduced me to the concept of slice-of-life storytelling. The combination of cute, charming characters and mature, thoughtful storytelling has had a bigger impact on my writing than anything else.”
3. Sandman by Neil Gaiman
“A story about stories, like much of Gaiman’s work, only Sandman has a messy, youthful ambition that is thrilling every time I read through it. The artists change every few chapters, like much of mainstream issue-based series, but with Sandman the artists were a lot more distinct, adding to the dreamlike feel.”
4. Beck by Harold Sakuishi
“The series that reminds me the most of my own teenage years.”
5. Onibi by Atelier Sento
“Atelier Sento tell stories of the ‘unseen’, rural Japan. They also tell stories about themselves, weaving spirits into their real life travels.”
6. Old City Blues by Giannis Milonogiannis
“The best cyberpunk series running!”
7. Cats of the Louvre by Taiyo Matsumoto
“Cats of the Louvre fulfills the promise of comics as an art form. Matsumoto does stuff here that wouldn’t be possible in any other medium.”
8. Delicious in Dungeon by Ryoko Kui
“I’ve spent my life searching for the perfect RPG-as-comic-book, and this is it.”
9. Again!! by Mitsuro Kubo
“A messy, touching time travel story with lots of yelling, Again!! frequently makes me laugh out loud.”
10. The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen
“A story about stories, and how we can use those stories to teach others and ourselves about our cultures, histories and identities, forever keeping in touch with the past.”
