David Daneman’s top 10 go-to comic book and graphic novel list

True North Country Comics Presents David Daneman's top 10 go-to comic book and graphic novel list

True North Country Comics presents the top 10 go-to comic books and graphic novels for David Daneman.

David attended the University of Kansas’ film program. After graduation, he worked on a few features and commercials before moving to South Korea. There he learned how to teach. It was also during this time that he began making comics. He combined a rotoscoping-style with pantomime storytelling and the incredibly bizarre comic strip The DaneMen was born. He later married and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. While working for the Webtoon website, David attended Vancouver Community College’s Digital Graphic Design Program. He now resides in Montreal. One of his current projects is a Kickstarter called iMMigratitude.

Here is David’s top 10 go-to comic book and graphic novel list:

Maus I & II by Art Spiegelman
“The first graphic novel I ever read. It is so much more than a holocaust-story.”

Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud
“Anybody who takes comics seriously should read this.”

Black Hole by Charles Burns
“I want Richard Linklater to direct a film of this. I read it once a year whenever I want to be very scared.”

American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang
“Three stories brilliantly interwoven; it was the sitcom version that really went for the kill.”

Woman World by Aminder Dhaliwal
“Imagine a world without men. Turns out it’s pretty okay.”

V for Vendetta by Alan Moore
“For anyone who is thinking of blowing up a federal building.”

Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo
“Fans of the anime should definitely read the manga.”

Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton
“Historical / literary humor from Canada’s own Kate Beaton”

Moon Cop by Tom Gauld
“Atmospheric and witty in a way that only Tom Gauld can pull off.”

Leaving Richard’s Valley by Michael DeForge
“An art book masquerading as a collection of webcomics. Love the punk rock look and nostalgia for a Toronto that is slowly being erased.”
