True North Country Comics Presents Mauricio Pommella's Top 10 Go-To Comic Book and Graphic Novel List

True North Country Comics presents the top 10 go-to comic books and graphic novels for Mauricio Pommella.

Mauricio is a visual artist in Vancouver, British Columbia, focusing primarily on communication and ideas. His works include art direction, graphic design, and illustration for digital and print use. Currently he works for a digital product studio by day and creates his independent comic projects by night. As a sci-fi and technology aficionado, his stories explore human conflicts, relationships and philosophical problems wrapped into futuristic worlds.

According to Mauricio: “As a visual artist, I have been always driven to comics and graphic novels that have a striking visual narrative. So to be honest, my top 10 comics are in fact a list of my top 10 artists.”

Here’s Mauricio Pommella’s top 10 go-to comic books and graphic novels:

Prison Ship by Bruce Jones and Esteban Maroto
“I love the sexy aesthetic of our heroes and how sci-fi could be so simple and naive.”

Frankenstein – Illustrated by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (Author), Bernie Wrightson (Illustrator), Stephen King (Introduction)
“Wrightson’s illustrations are simply fantastic, full of details and complexity transporting the reader to that scary and terrifying atmosphere.”

Batman – The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, Klaus Janson and Lynn Varley
“Back in the 80’s, this one was a game-changer to me.”

The Incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Jean Giraud (Moebius).
“In this book, all the worlds and characters rendered by Moebius to this day are absolutely fantastic. Rich, complex societies represented through thin, elegant lines. Perfection!”

Elektra: Assassin by Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz
“This work, in particular, was the one who made me decide to pursue comics and art as a career… The explosion of colours and the surreal style breaking all rules in the medium was simply unbelievable.”

From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell
“A masterpiece… The story unfolds perfectly with all the minutia and care that Moore traditionally puts in his storytelling, combined with Eddie Campbell’s loose style creating the perfect sequential art.”

The Collected Toppi Vol. 1: The Enchanted World by Sergio Toppi
“His brush strokes and the abstract lines full of details are simply the best examples of why black and white is indeed the purest way to render comic books.”

Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli
“Love Mazzucchelli’s subtle, realistic, noir style… it’s so precise, every line on paper has a purpose.”

Slaine: The Horned God by Pat Mills and Simon Bisley
“Brutal sword and sorcery meet the vivid paintings of Simon Bisley. Page after page after page those acrylic paintings are simply a feast to the eyes.”

Love & Rockets – Las Locas Book 1 by Jaime Hernandez
“This one is from 1983. When Jaime was still figuring out his style and characters, but clearly you can see in the work his complete control over the visual narrative, character expressions, body language, anatomy and how he portrays his female characters with mastery. ”
