True North Country Comics presents the top 10 go-to comic book and graphic novel list from Von Allan.
Von is a comic book creator from Ottawa, Ontario who previously ran an independent book store. His works include Stargazer and The Road To God Knows graphic novels, plus a variety of comic book short stories. His more recent work is Wolf’s Head.
Here’s Von Allen’s top 10 go-to comic book and graphic novel list:
“While a few stories have dated, there is still a great deal of humour in these stories. Sublime and full of surreal satire. Simply wonderful.”
2. Valiant books by Jim Shooter.
“A really enjoyable interlocked action-adventure world. I couldn’t care less about subsequent stuff, but Shooter’s era at Valiant is great.
3. Crossfire from Eclipse Comics – written by Mark Evanier and illustrated by Dan Spiegle “It remains one of my favourite series of action-adventure comics. That has a lot to do with the humanity that Evanier and Spiegle gave to series protagonist Jay Endicott.”
4. Axel Pressbutton (from Warrior, Axel Pressbutton, and Laser Eraser and Pressbutton)
“While certainly an acquired taste, these were and remain a great deal of fun. I first start reading them when I was ten, which probably explains a lot!”
5. The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens (originally in Star Slayer, Pacific Presents, and The Rocketeer Adventure Magazine)
“What can I say? Stevens is great! And please seek out the 90s film. A lot of fun, that.”
6. Dragonfly from AC Comics (Americomics and Dragonfly) – written and illustrated by the late Rik Levins
“I have a major soft spot for the character. I just wish it had gone on much longer.”
7. Femforce from AC Comics – written by Bill Black and illustrated various artists over the years (my favourite being Brad Gorby)
“Femforce is superhero series that is both a lot of fun and has a very consistent narrative (not too shabby for a series that started in 1985 and continues to this day).”
8. Freemind and Metallix from Future Comics
“While I wasn’t as much of a fan of DEATHMASK, there was a lot of potential in these two series from Future Comics and I still feel a great deal of “what if” with them. Bob Layton, Dick Giordano, and David Michelinie had, I think, something cooking here and it would have been interesting to see where they went with it. Ah, well.”
9. Mage by Matt Wagner
“While I was pretty disappointed with the most recent series, the first two (Mage: The Hero Discovered and Mage: The Hero Denied) are still some of my favourite comics.”
10. Strange Tales (Doctor Strange appearances) by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko
“I finally had a chance to read their entire run a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Full of imagination and very different from much of the other Marvel output in the 1960s, these are well-worth giving a try.”
