It’s that time of year again when Comic-Con International and the countless attendees take over San Diego. Podcast available on Apple Podcasts and player.FM

I’ve scoured the Internet to gather together the latest and greatest information about the amazing Canadian comic book creators who’ll be showcasing their talents at the annual event.

But first, here’s some of the late-breaking news about Canadian comic book creators:

Bedside Press announced its launching mentorship and publishing programs for new comics creators. Acclaimed publisher Hope Nicholson is attending Comic Con this week to talk about the various programs and what Bedside Press can offer creators. Hope was quoted as saying: “As a Kickstarter Thought Leader alumni, I often helped campaign creators succeed by offering guided advice. As a publisher, I know that I’m in a privileged space with access to worldwide markets. With many talented creators who have pitches rejected by other publishers, and others with fully self-financed books who lack distribution access, I want to use my resources to lift these books out of limbo and have them on bookstore shelves.”

SyFy Wire wrote about a new Kickstarter project for the horror graphic novel Everglade Angels from Blake Northcott, Scott Lobdell and Roc Upchurch. The story follows a girls softball team that takes a shortcut through the Florida Everglades where they run into a murderous cult. Blake was quoted as saying: “I’m a huge fan of both the stories and creators of the ’90s – it was a magic time that can’t be replicated – but that won’t stop me from trying. That’s where this project started. To create the first graphic novel from Northworld Publishing I wanted a comic book dream team, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.”

Comic Book.com announced two new books coming from Jeff Lemire under the DC Black Label banner. Joker:Killer Smile will available in October with illustrator Andrea Sorrentino. Jeff was quoted as saying: “Getting to work with my long-time collaborator Andrea Sorrentino on a Joker story is very exciting. The Joker is an iconic character and we wanted to create something that challenges readers to look at him in a new and horrifying way.” In November, Jeff will collaborate with Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz on The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage. When asked about this collaboration, Jeff said: “Denys Cowan’s run on The Question has been a touchstone for me as a creator and a fan of comics for a long time. Getting the chance to team with Denys and Bill Sienkiewicz to return to Hub City and Vic Sage is a dream come true.”

Marvel interviewed Ed Brisson who’ll be writing the Contagion limited series. The five-issue limited series illustrated by a variety of artists including Adam Gorham, will feature Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Thing, Iron First, Moon Knight and more as they take on a horrifying new threat not yet seen by the Marvel Universe. When asked about the series, Ed was quoted as saying: “When [editor] Jake Thomas hit me up in January to work on CONTAGION, he sold the series to me as a street-level horror event. Obviously, Jake knows that I’m a huge street-level guy, but he also knows that I’m a horror junkie. He and I have talked for hours about horror films, so I think he knew it was an easy sell for me. I’m thrilled — finally, I can put an entire lifetime of rotting my brain with horror flicks to good use.”
