Von is a comic book creator from Ottawa, Ontario who previously ran an independent book store. His works include Stargazer and The Road To God Knows graphic novels, plus a variety of comic book short stories.
During our conversation, Von talked about his comic book series Wolf’s Head. He also discussed his upbringing, his late entry into the comic book industry that came through hard work and determination, and discussed the role that comic books can play when dealing with issues of today.
Von also shared some very personal moments by discussing his late mother and her mental health concerns. Von participated in a documentary film entitled “I Am Still Your Child’ (iamstillyourchild.com) which explores the point of view of growing up with a mentally ill parent.

In Canada, January 30 is Bell Let’s Talk Day – an annual event where Bell donates funds in support of mental health. It’s also a day to start talking about mental health. Here’s some of the current news about Canadian comic book creators and supporters.
Timmins Today interviewed creator Davis Dewsbury about his love of comic books, his current project Auric of the Great White North, and the vibrant comic book scene in Timmins. Davis was quoted as saying: “”There’s something magical about comic books. Since it’s often a collaborative effort between writers and artists, sometimes you get something really special. It’s like watching a really talented band and watching how each member works off of one another to create this flawless piece of art.”

CBC Arts published an article and supporting video about Johnnie Christmas that focuses on his move from Florida to Canada. Johnnie was quoted as saying: “I can meditate on these life experiences and now, creatively, different things are starting to come out because I can go weeks without feeling those sort of things from the outside world pushing in on my entire life.” You can read more at CBC.ca/arts

The Hollywood Reporter interviewed the team behind Fight Club 3 about bringing Tyler Burden to comic books. Cameron Stewart said: “I’ve embraced the cartoonier side of my artwork, so that even the most gruesome subjects are depicted with a playful wink.” Dave McCaig said: “When these diverse realities meet, it’s a lot of fun, and I think people are going to love how it all comes together.”
