True North Country Comics Celebrates First Year of Success

Today True North Country Comics celebrates its first year of success for promoting Canadian comic book creators and supporters. Over the course of the year, the website, supported by a myriad of social media, offered an ongoing calendar of events, candid interviews, entertaining podcasts, weekly updates on new books by Canadian creators and much more – all designed to celebrate Canadian comic books and the talented creators that make them.

True North Country Comics was unveiled in 2017 just as the nation was caught up with Canada’s 150 celebration. The past year covered conventions, festivals, book launches, panels sessions and a lot more.

“It’s been an honour to discover Canadian comic book creators and to share their personal stories with the rest of the world — from up-and-coming independents to those working on globally recognized comic books,” said John Swinimer, editor and publisher, True North Country Comics. “It all started with the question ‘Do Canadians make comic books?’ So, the website and podcast has become just our small way of acknowledging the comic book creators and supporters across this great country.”

“True North Country Comics is a great resource for those interested in Canadian comic book creators,” said Michael Walsh, comic book creator for the recent Star Wars: The Last Jedi adaptation for Marvel Comics. “I love seeing what my country-mates have coming out on a weekly basis and am always proud to be included on the site.”

“I have so much respect for John’s efforts in showcasing Canadian talent in the comic book industry, when there’s very few Canadian media outlets that do,” said Jason Loo, creator of The Pitiful Human-Lizard.  “On top of that, he’s a very warm and friendly person, a pleasure to see at the convention scene.”

According to Ramón Pérez, cartoonist for DC Comics, Marvel Comics and more: “Enjoy a quality look into the Canadian comic’s scene thanks to John and True North Country Comics!”

“John is a thoughtful interviewer with a keen passion for the Canadian comics scene,” said Steven Andrews, editor, Toronto Comix Anthology. “I always look forward to chatting with him at cons!”

While originally designed as a complementary site, Tools of The Trade, is a dedicated section that goes behind the scenes to showcase the tools that Canadian comic book creators use to do their amazing work. It continues to feature insightful interviews with creators, the makers of the leading hardware and software, plus new information about digital tools for comic book readers.
