Meet the Makers Panel at the Guelph Public Library – part 1

Here’s part one of the Meet the Makers Panel recorded recently at the Guelph Public Library.

The moderator is Jennifer Haines, owner of the Eisner award-winning comic book and graphic novel store The Dragon. The main store is located in Guelph, Ontario with a new location to open in Milton, Ontario.

Scott Chantler is a cartoonist and illustrator. He’s the winner of the Joe Shuster Award in the Comics for Kids category for the first book in the Three Thieves series, Tower of Treasure. He was also nominated for two Eisner Awards for Two Generals. He’s currently nominated for this year’s Eisner Awards along with writer Cecil Castellucci for the anthology Mine: A Celebration of Liberty and Freedom for All Benefiting Planned Parenthood in the Best Short Story category. He is currently working on Bix, an experimental graphic biography of the tragic jazz cornet player, for Simon & Schuster. It’s scheduled for release in late 2019.

Jason Lapidus has taught art for nearly a decade in both the classroom and museum gallery. Although his love of drawing comics began more than thirty years ago, Group of 7 is Jason’s first published work.

Chris Sanagan is an archivist who lives with his family in Guelph. He has written for Spacing Toronto, The American Archivist and the Guelph Mercury Tribune. Group of 7 is his first work of fiction.

Brian Fray was the editorial cartoonist for the Guelph Tribune for 25 years. He created a syndicated cartoon strip called Le Grand Chef Pierre that ran in 100 newspapers internationally. He was voted 2011 Cartoonist of the Year by the Ontario Community Newspaper Association. His current strip is called Frayed Edge.

Organized by the Friends of the Guelph Public Library, the panel answered a variety of questions centred on their experiences in the comic book industry. They shared their stories discussing the essence of the comic book genre, demonstrating their work and others they admire, while explaining how they approach their subject matter and creative process.
