A Look At Digital Comics

As a kid, if you told me that there’s an electronic handheld device allowing me to read all the comic books I ever wanted, I would have thought you were an alien. Now that ability is commonplace; growing more and more as an accepted means of comic book reading.

While some prefer to have the traditional paper ‘floppy’ version, having a digital comic book is often more convenient and space-saving in the long run.

For this article, we’ll focus on one such service that’s making waves. ComiXology is an Amazon.com, Inc. subsidiary, it’s a cloud-based digital comics shopping and reading service offering content from over 125 publishers as well as thousands of independent creators from around the world.

According to David Steinberger, CEO of comiXology, “Part of realizing our audacious goal of making everyone on earth a comics, graphic novel, or manga fan is bringing the best reading experience to everyone, whether on comiXology or on Kindle.”

He added: “We’re in a new golden age of storytelling with more incredible comics, graphic novels and manga than ever before, ComiXology Unlimited is a fantastic portal to tons of great comics at a ridiculously great price.”

Earlier this year, Guided View was introduced by comiXology on the Kindle app for iOS, Fire tablets and Android enabling Kindle readers to cinematically read from panel-to-panel at their own pace. Because each Guided View experience is ‘handcrafted’ by a true comic book fan, readers can get even more immersive in their favourite comic books.

As of April of this year, Guided View was offered in over 90,000 digital comics and graphic novels like never before, making reading comics more immersive and enjoyable on any size device.

For those who can’t get enough comic books, last year saw the introduction of comiXology Unlimited — a cost effective, subscription based service to discover your favourite comic books when being easily introduced to new titles. The service also offers exclusive content not available on other digital comic book outlets.

And just this past spring, Marvel Comics joined comiXology Unlimited, giving fans the ability to read over 10,000 titles including thousands of Marvel Comics single issues and collections as part of their comiXology Unlimited membership, featuring Super Heroes like The Avengers, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Guardians of the Galaxy and more.

Another offering, comiXology Originals, provides graphic novel and manga readers exclusive and unique titles including Harvey Kurtzman’s Marley’s Ghost, the graphic novel adaptation of Charles Dickens’s beloved classic A Christmas Carol.

I’ve got to admit that there’s only so much room to store comic books around my house. Quite often my bookshelves and long boxes are overflowing with comic books to the point that I have to give them away or sell them to keep the space tidy. However, I can see the benefit of digital comic books. They are easily accessible, take up virtually no space (no pun intended) and never age.

Between easily accessible digital comics and the variety of product available at local comic book stores, it’s a great time to be a comic book fan.
